All semester for my internship, I have been part of planning the 4th annual Kid's Science Palooza for Provo City. It has been a blast! This past Saturday, March 12th, was the event. Everything turned out so good! It is basically an event for kids in the community to come and have fun doing hands-on science activities. We had 23 different activities, 6 BYU science clubs, Coke-Mentos explosions, Sub Zero ice cream demonstration, and a live animal show. We each had our own assignments to take care of. I was in charge of the Bubble Room (which had 3 different bubble activities), Magic Sand, Cloud in a Bottle, and Quicksand. For my capstone project for my internship, I was in charge of volunteers and the BYU clubs. I had to do the recruiting, communication, and training of the volunteers. It was a really good experience and I learned so much, not to mention had a lot of fun! :)
I apologize for so many pictures...its more for my sake to remember it all and for my mom who didn't get to see it.

| These are Boo Bubbles. They were one of the activities in the Bubble Room. They are bubbles filled with dry ice fog (carbon dioxide). The kids can hold them with gloves on and when they pop, fog comes out. |

The other activity in the Bubble Room is hard to capture on camera. It is called Bouncing Bubble. We made a bubble solution with glycerin in it. When the kids wear cotton gloves, the bubbles don't pop, they bounce! It's pretty cool and goes against everything you've ever known.

| This was Cloud in a Bottle. It's just made by pumping up a bottle with rubbing alcohol in it. When you pull the stopper out, a cloud instantly appears. You can also see my finished water cycle in the background. |

| This is Magic Sand. It is just sand that has been dyed and sprayed with a substance like Scotchguard to make it hydrophobic. The kids could play with it and compare it to regular sand to learn how hydrophobic things work. |

We also had a forensic science room, edible blood, magnetic car racing, kids in motion room, martial arts power (kids break boards), plus all the awesome things the BYU clubs brought.
It was such a successful event. We estimated we had 1200-1500 people come. It was so much fun! Have I mentioned how much I LOVE my internship?

oh i am so jealous. if i could redo my major, i'd take YOURS! That looks like the perfect event! So much work! So much science. You look like you've found a niche!

Jill, the "quicksand" is what is known as a shear-thickening fluid. It is one of several classes of Non-Newtonian fluids (named for the famous Sir Issac). Other examples of shear thickening fluids are: silly putty, taffy, flubber, etc.
Science is such fun. Looks like you got to show kids that science is fun too.
